It’s a marathon and it’s still continuing - the 2011 World Series of Poker is approaching the end but the game we’ve been waiting for is now in session. The Main Event is Event #58 and it’s now underway. There were one or two doomsday predictions before the event, based on the number of potential entrants who may have had money tied up in Fill Tilt Poker. The worry was that many players would not be able to afford the buy-ins without getting Full Tilt refunds.
In the event, neither happened - Full Tilt did not manage to refund players in time (although with the European takeover underway, this should be rectified soon) but attendance was as good as could be expected. The field for Event #58 clocked in at 6,865, the third best ever. This puts the prize pool at $64,531,000 and the first prize at $8,711,956.
Any standout potential winners then? Well Phil Hellmuth must be in the running as is Matt
Affleck. Also one to watch is last year’s winner Jonathan Duhamel who would love to be one of only a handful of players who have won back to back Main Event bracelets. For anyone who fancies a sensibly priced punt, a wager on the last woman standing is always good value. Olivia Boeree, Vanessa Sebst and Leo Margets are well worth a shout.
Macau Revenues Up Again
It does seem as if this is a monthly story which just re-writes itself. The Chinese territory of Macau has once again revealed revenue figures the like of which are going to keep Las Vegas in second or third place for some time to come. June showed a 52.4% increase on the same month for 2010.
For the Las Vegas companies, the good news is that several of them are involved in Macau - MGM Resorts, Wynn Resorts Ltd and Las Vegas Sands Ltd. Macau’s revenues have been bolstered by the region’s holiday season as well as the opening of the gigantic Galaxy Cotai earlier in the year.
